Types of Flooring

There are a few options when considering new flooring for a dining room. Carpet is one option for a dining room floor. This is especially common when the living room and dining room are combined. Light-colored carpet is often preferable, making the room seem a little larger. Although keep in mind stains will easily show up on lighter-colored carpet.

A more popular choice of flooring in the dining room is hardwood. Hardwood looks gorgeous in dining rooms and can go well with any style of dining room. Hardwood is also easier to keep clean and to wipe up spills. Lighter hardwood may open up a dining room whereas deeper colored hardwood gives the look of elegance. Area rugs added to hardwood floors can soften up the hardwood. They can also add some color where needed.

Laminate flooring is also an option for a dining room floor. This type of flooring is very durable and does not scratch as easily as hardwood. As it is more durable, moisture-resistant and non-fading, it is becoming a popular choice in flooring, especially dining rooms. Area rugs can also be added to laminate flooring to bring some color into the room.

Marble flooring is also a choice for dining rooms, albeit a less common choice. This unique, natural stone offers beauty to a dining room. It is very durable and easy to clean. There are many patterns that can be made with marble floors, depending on the look of the dining room.

Current Trends in Flooring

One of the top current trends in flooring for dining rooms is hardwood. Not only are hardwood floors popular in dining room/living room areas but also to put the same hardwood in the kitchen and great room. Having the same flooring in all of these areas adds a sense of cohesiveness in these main areas of a house. Adding area rugs to the hardwood floors in the dining room is also a popular choice. This can add some softness and luxury to hardwood flooring. Laminate flooring is a popular alternative to hardwood flooring. It is less expensive and more durable than hardwood but can also give a similar look to a dining room as hardwood.

Pricing of Flooring

Pricing of dining room flooring varies depending on the option chosen. Carpet is the least expensive type of flooring, especially when combined with carpeting in the living room. Laminate flooring is a little more expensive however it is easier to install so many people can lay this flooring as a do-it-yourself project. Hardwood flooring can be expensive depending on the style and wood. Oftentimes, homeowners do not feel comfortable in installing hardwood themselves and therefore, there is an installation charge on top of the materials charge. Marble flooring however is very expensive. Most homeowners do not have the tools or skills required to put down a marble floor and installation can be costly. Of course with laminate, hardwood and marble flooring in dining rooms, area rugs may give a nice look but that also adds to the cost.
